Roman Janál

Baritone

Roman Janál is a soloist of the National Theatre Brno (Janáček Opera). He has been lecturing at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and at the Prague International Conservatory. He was awarded prestigious Thalia Prize for the role of Pollux in the production of Rameau's opera Castor et Pollux at the National Theater Prague in 1999.

 

Roman Janál graduated from the Pilsner Conservatoire (he studied violin) and vocal department of the Music Academy in Sofia. While he was still a student he appeared as a guest soloist with the State Opera in Sofia as Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and Prince Tarquinius in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia. After his studies he was engaged in Banská Bystrica, at the Prague Chamber Opera (later known as Opera Mozart) and in J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. He made his successful debut as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and Figaro in Il Barbiere in the Prague State Opera. Since 1997 he has been engaged with the National Theatre Prague, where he portrayed many main roles from Czech and international repertoire including Grégorio in Romeo et Juliette, Escamillo in Carmen, Alexandre in Martinů's comic one-act opera Alexandre Bis and the title role in Don Giovanni. He performs also Silvio in I Pagliacci, count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Germont in La Traviata, Vladislav in Dalibor, Petr Vok in The Devils Wall and many others. He gave guest performances with the National Theatre Prague and Prague State Opera in Japan, Hong Kong, France, Germany and Spain. He also appeared in Wilsson's Prague production of Janáček's The Fade (Osud) at Teatro Real in Madrid and in Ravenna he was heard as Don Giovanni.

 

Roman Janál established himself as a remarkable concert singer and regularly performs at music festivals in the Czech Republic and abroad (Prague Spring, Prague Autumn, Smetanas's Litomyšl, Český Krumlov International Music Festival, Janáček May International Music Festival, Bratislava Music Festival, St. Wenceslas Festivities, Dvořák's Autumn, Festival Pontes, Concentus Moraviae, Bohuslav Martinů Days in London under the bottom of Jiří Bělohlávek and BBC Symphony Orchestra, Europalia Brussels, Bohuslav Martinů Festival in Amsterdam with the conductor Christopher Hogwood). He also gives concerts with Czech and international symphony orchestras including The Czech Philharmonic, The Prague Symphony Orchestra, The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Slovak Philharmonic and The Praque Philharmonia. With The Prague Philharmonia he toured to Japan, France, Spain, Switzerland and Austria. His concert repertoire includes Dvořák's Biblical Songs, Brahm's German Requiem and The Bouquet of Flower's by Bohuslav Martinů.

 

Roman Janál recorded CDs for labels Multisonic, Radioservis and Supraphon. He recorded for DGG Janáček's opera The Excursions of Mr. Brouček with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the bottom of Jiří Bělohlávek in 2008. He cooperates with Czech TV and Czech Radio (from among of the titles is probably the film adaptation of Martinů's Tears of the Knife a The Voice of the Forest the most remarkable).
